We approved 8/9/2025 for the next hamfest. We discussed selling prize or raffle tickets, having guest speakers, and the possibility of hosting the State Convention. HCC approved our use or the Fire Training Facility for next year.

1900 Meeting called to order at the Reno County EOC.

Announcements:
* Wichita Hamfest will be Oct. 5th.
* Kansas QSO Party will be August 24-25. Our club will be using the WØL callsign and will be hosted by ACØRL at 1824 Nickerson Blvd. Operating hours will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on the 24th and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the 25th. This is a club event, so please do some operating. Even if you don’t have a General-class license, you can legally operate.

* Hamfest Committee
We profited $385. We had very happy vendors and attendees; Todd was the sole dissenter. Next year’s hamfest will be at same venue on August 9, 2025. Motion Zack, Jerry, passed. We will serve coffee. Door prizes will be announced in advance. And we’ll look into hosting the ARRL state convention.
Presentation:
This was given by Reno County 911 Director Kevin Irwin. His talk was very informative, and we should be very proud of the improvements he has brought to the Dispatch Center. The Q & A following his talk was very enlightening.

Hamfest Committee
We should have a total of 28 tables available. We will have at least three vendors. About 8 tables will be reserved for vendors. Cash only. Will need to provide water and ice, coffee? (NOTE: In a follow-up e-mail to Jerry, Zack, WØZC, notes there are drinking fountains in the HCC Fire Science Building. — Editor.) Friday afternoon setup; the guard will open up for us before 5 p.m. Saturday we will open up around 7:15 a.m. Not sure about VE’s.

Announcements: President Tucker announced that the sidewalk sale will be held this year on June 15th. The location will be Post 3115 VFW, 4801 W. Douglass in Wichita.

There was no reading of the minutes, treasurer’s report or repeater trustee report this month due to the secretary-treasurer attending to family business. No repeater problems were reported.

Report of Hamfest committee: Things continue to progress. The location will be the Fire Science building, 3211 E. 4th Ave in Hutchinson. Prices will be $10 per table and $5 a person entry fee. Zack has not yet had the opportunity to inspect the facility.

Old Business: President Tucker stated he has fielded several inquires about our hamfest this year. He also stated the proof of insurance costs have been determined for both hamfest and Field Day. The prices are $195 for hamfest and $100 for Field Day. Mark from Derby will attend the hamfest and has requested 5 tables.

New Business: During the June 11 meeting we will discuss what we are going to be doing on Field Day. The location will be Gottschalk Park which is right inside the entrance at the intersection of 20th Ave. and Poplar St. Gottschalk Park will be available from noon on Friday June 22 through noon Sunday June 24.

We had a very good turnout with some new faces and some faces we haven’t seen in a while, so we had everyone introduce themselves.
There was no official meeting last month so reading minutes was dispensed with.

The HCC Fire Science Building, 3211 E. 4th St., is available for free, except for insurance which will cost $200. There will be a $10 vendor fee and a $5 entrance fee.

Field Day
The fairgrounds will allow us to use Gottschalk Park at the fair entrance for $100, no insurance requirements. They will allow access to electricity, bathrooms and shelter. They also assured us the sprinklers will be turned off. Motion to approve Jake/Phil – Passed
Grant
Dan brought the club up to date with his ham radio club at Little River School. He was able to use the $500 to purchase many thousands of dollars’ worth of radio and accessories. He has four students signed up.

* Bob and Zack moved we form a hamfest committee for our August 10, 2024, hamfest. Motion carried. Bob and Zack are initial members of the committee.
* Christmas Party
The party will be at 6:30 p.m. December 12, at 44 Swarens, Rice Park. Members bring a pot-luck side dish or dessert. Carriage Crossing will provide meat and potatoes.

* KAØNES’s brother passed away in Wisconsin.
* EOC wants to do a test of our capabilities to communicate during a trunking system failure. They are requesting 14+ local hams using HTs or mobiles position themselves throughout the county at predetermined locations, fire stations most likely. We are giving everyone a heads-up because we will need to have the folks available. We’ll let everyone know when the test is scheduled.

Thanks to all of the participants who made it a huge success. We really put WØWR on the state map as an active club that can get things done!
* Band-pass Filters
New shipping date of Feb 7, 2024, just in time for Field Day
* Club funds
We discussed taking a portion of the club funds and putting them into a high yield CD. We will choose a term and yield to maximize return. Motion to spend $5,000 for the CD by Larry/Roger was passed.
* Hamfest review
We spent a total of $363.08 between food and door prizes. We deposited $105 for refreshments and $327 for raffle and donations for a total of $432. We profited $7.97 from refreshments. We profited $60.95 from raffle and donations. The total gain was $68.92, which is not an outstanding financial gain, but we are gaining a reputation for holding a great hamfest.
Some of the takeaways:

  • We had a lot of food leftover.
  • Food did not generate revenues, either lower costs or charge more next year.
  • Need more door prizes, require vendors to provide a door prize, donations from other sources.
  • Stick to a schedule of what will be raffled and when.

The next hamfest will be August 10, 2024.

New business
* Motion to purchase a second antenna and required feed line by Clint/Joe, passed. It will be an Alpha Delta DXCC type, 120 feet RG8X. We will purchase is from the Derby Radio Shack, and we set a $350 budget.
* Armory cookies
To remain in their good graces, we should continue to give them cookies on occasion. No oatmeal raisin.
* Christmas Party
This will be at 6:30 p.m., December 12, at Rice Park. We will use Carriage Crossing to provide cooked meats. We will be charging a per-plate fee which will be determined by per-plate costs from Carriage Crossing. If a member brings a side dish or dessert, they will pay half price; if a member does not bring a side dish, they will pay the entire fee.
* DMR repeater
This repeater was struck by lightning a while back, and it needs some parts replaced. We have a good number of users on that repeater as it supports DMR, Fusion, and AP25. Motion to spend $150 to reimburse expenses on the DMR repeater repair by Mark/Clint. Passed
* ARRL membership renewal via the club
